In just a few days, the All Blacks will be charging onto the field at the Rugby World Cup proudly wearing the Silver Fern.
But as thousands of Kiwi Rugby fans put on their black shirts this week, they will also be wearing another, more sinister logo: principal sponsor, AIG.
AIG is not just another boring insurance company. It is doing what 14 other companies have refused to do: insure the Adani Carmichael mine. The most bitterly opposed mine in Australia’s history.
If built, this massive new coal mine will pump out more carbon than whole countries. It will help destroy the Great Barrier Reef and tear up the traditional country of the Wangan and Jagalingou peoples.
And it’s only possible because AIG is insuring it.
The All Blacks are the most important sponsorship AIG has.
Right now AIG is in damage control. It’s hoping that another win for the All Blacks will help smooth over the bad PR they’ve been receiving for getting into bed with Adani.
But the All Blacks aren’t like other teams. They pride themselves on living their values on and off the field, embracing culture and service to the community.
The fight to stop the Adani coal mine is one of the biggest fights in Australian history. Thanks to the work of thousands of people like you, Adani is isolated. No major financier will give it funding and 14 other insurance companies have backed way.
But it’s hell bent on building this climate-wrecking mine and AIG is one of the last few companies it can call on.
By suspending their sponsorship with AIG the All Blacks can show the world the kind of leadership they're known for.
