BREAKING: The Austrian parliament has passed a historic vote to ban glyphosate, the toxic Bayer-Monsanto weedkiller.
This is such amazing news. Until now, no EU country has dared to challenge Bayer’s agrochemical juggernaut with a full ban. But in the face of mounting evidence of glyphosate’s links to cancer and other illnesses, Austria finally laid down the law, setting a precedent for other nations to follow.
But there’s a problem. The EU Commission could still challenge Austria’s ban, on the grounds that they -- under pressure from Bayer’s lobbyists -- ruled glyphosate legal in Europe until 2022. And Bayer’s already gearing up to force the Commission to do just that.
Unless thousands of people like you and me put pressure on the EU to respect Austria’s decision, this historic ban could crumble before the ink is even dry.
Stop Bayer-Monsanto in its tracks: Tell the EU Commission to uphold Austria’s glyphosate ban!
Time is running out for Bayer-Monsanto’s deadly herbicide. In 2017, hundreds of thousands of SumOfUs members like you joined forces across Europe to call for an end to glyphosate -- and succeeded, despite all of Bayer’s lobbying might, in getting the weedkiller’s license shrunk down to five years, from a planned 15.
But if we keep the pressure up, glyphosate might not even last that long. In the US, Bayer is being weakened by lawsuit after lawsuit from cancer patients sickened by the toxic chemical. Its investors are even revolting against CEO Werner Baumann over his decision to acquire Monsanto and its weedkiller.
The Austrian ban could be the biggest nail yet in glyphosate’s coffin -- but only if we can convince the EU Commission to ignore Bayer’s pleading and leave it alone. If this works, we’ll be closer than ever to a glyphosate-free future for all of Europe.
Tell the EU Commission to respect and uphold Austria’s ban on glyphosate.
