The U.K. government wants to put G4S -- a corporation with a horrifying track record of human rights violations and ripping off taxpayers -- in charge of the national helpline responsible for helping people facing discrimination on the basis of race, gender or sexual orientation.
This would be like putting BP in charge of enforcing environmental protections -- and we have a (very) short window of opportunity to stop this contract.
It appears that the government may have failed to follow all the necessary steps before awarding the contract to G4S, and if we can raise enough money we can help fund a legal case to reverse the decision to award G4S the contract.
Thanks to SumOfUs members, we have been able to support Law Centres Network to take the first steps and initiate a legal challenge. Now, we have just a days to decide whether we can take it forward -- to do that we need to know that we have the funds to instruct our legal team to carry on the work.
Will you chip in to help stop G4S from taking over our discrimination helpline?
The Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) is a lifeline for people facing human rights issues or discrimination for example on the basis of disability, race or gender. And G4S has no business coming anywhere near this contract.
The company bungled the Olympics security contract, has ripped off British taxpayers to the tune of millions, and was implicated in the death of Jimmy Mubenga as he was being deported to Angola.
It recently left a dialysis patient stranded at home after taking over the contract for patient transport in Kent. In Lincolnshire, control room staff were suspended for making bogus 999 calls to improve their perceived performance.
G4S stands accused of assaulting children in a UK young offenders’ unit, torturing prisoners in South Africa, and putting the life of an unborn child at risk while deporting a wheelchair-using pregnant woman.
And now the government wants the company to run a helpline to support those facing discrimination or human rights abuses? Are you serious?
If we act fast, we could stop this. As well as the legal proceedings we’re working with partners to shine a spotlight on how the government failed to follow the right procedures before awarding this contract to G4S. We’re making sure that the long history of human rights violations, discrimination and abuse committed by G4S is widely known.
