UPDATE June 2019:
Liberty Mutual has publicly confirmed that it will not provide insurance for the Adani Carmichael coal mine.
This follows 13 of the world’s largest insurers and reinsurers also ruling out insurance for the project, which include AXA, Allianz, QBE, Swiss Re.
This is great news BUT we still don’t know which company is providing insurance coverage for Adani’s mine. Liberty Mutual’s statement finally came in response to an Adani spokesperson claiming that they have the requisite insurance in place.
Now, we're pressuring AIG to do the same. Get involved here.
Coal giant Adani is desperate to build its Reef-wrecking mine - a threat to traditional owners’ human rights, our climate, and the precious Great Barrier Reef and its unique lifeforms.
But we won’t let it. With your help we could get one last thing to stand in Adani’s way: the insurance industry. Because without insurance, Adani cannot build this mine.
Eleven insurance companies, including the world’s biggest insurers like Allianz and AXA, have already ruled out insuring this mine.
But there is one you might not have heard of lurking behind the scenes: multi-billion dollar American insurer Liberty Mutual. If enough people like you speak up, together we can force Liberty Mutual to reject Adani’s mine too.
Public pressure from people like you works. A huge public outcry has already made 47 global financial institutions decide that it’s too risky to fund Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine, including Australia’s big four banks.
Still, Adani is hell-bent on pushing on. It’s now even paying for the mine itself.
To stop the mine once and for all, now we need your support to go after the insurers. Because it could be the decision of an insurer like Liberty Mutual that determines whether this mega mine goes ahead and ruins our climate.
Insurance companies aren’t used to be campaigned against. Your voice along other SumOfUs members could really scare Liberty Mutual into action.
Because this mine is bad news. It is being challenged by the Wangan and Jagalingou traditional owners, who are fighting the mine in Australian courts and at the UN.
The Carmichael mine would open up the untouched Galilee Basin, which houses billions of tonnes of coal, and set off a ticking carbon bomb. For the sake of our climate, this coal needs to stay in the ground.
Our precious Reef has already suffered unprecedented bleaching events that lead to masses of dead coral. Intensifying climate change could make coral bleaching more frequent and worse.
And we stand to lose millions of tonnes of precious World Heritage Area seabed, which will be dredged so more coal can be shipped through the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.
SumOfUs members have taken on coal giant Adani before and helped win. When we acted together we helped forced huge banks like Westpac and NAB to publicly back away from this destructive mine, protecting this country, our planet and its people from irreversible coal mining.
Adani’s on its last legs. With your support we can force Liberty Mutual to do the right thing and put the final nail in the coffin.
