Unbelievable. Lidl made headlines last September when it announced it would only stock Fairtrade bananas in its 3300 German stores -- but now the discount giant is quietly taking back that announcement, hoping no one will notice or care.
Lidl: We noticed, and we care. So do banana producers in developing countries across Latin America and Africa, thousands of whom will be affected if you fail to keep your promise.
Each under-priced banana Lidl sells represents a farm worker who’s subjected to back-breaking labour and exposed to toxic pesticides for just pennies a day. Lidl’s top execs believe we won’t spend more on fruit from farms who pay their workers a living wage. It’s up to us to tell them cheap bananas aren’t worth it!
Tell Lidl to keep its promise and stock only Fairtrade bananas.
European supermarkets’ drive to keep banana prices down has led to horrifying working conditions on conventional plantations -- including child labour, routine exposure to toxic chemicals, and no possibility to organise for better rights.
After consumers like you made Lidl aware of the rampant exploitation in its banana supply chain, the discounter declared it was switching to 100 percent Fairtrade bananas, grown on farms that protect workers’ rights, pay employees a living wage and meet designated environmental standards.
To go back on this decision would be a disaster -- signaling to banana plantations that ethics and sustainability don’t pay, and encouraging other supermarkets to buy more conventional bananas to compete. That’s why we’ve got to step in, to remind Lidl of the promise it made to us and what’s at stake. Over 75,000 people got Lidl to make the switch to Fairtrade -- but clearly, we need more than that to get the corporation to stick to its word. Please, will you sign to make sure Lidl keeps playing fair?
