After months of unrelenting pressure from thousands of people like you, it looks like American insurance giant AIG has stopped insuring the catastrophic Adani Carmichael coal mine.
If built, Adani's mine will be one of the largest new coal mines in the world. It will spew out millions of tonnes of carbon and condemn the fate of the Great Barrier Reef which lies just a few hours from the coal pit.
Despite that, just a few weeks ago AIG was deeply tied up with Adani. It was insuring the first construction phase of the mine and was just about to renew this insurance for a new term.
But thanks to thousands of SumOfUs members and others speaking out, it looks AIG has run scared.
But here's the catch: we’ve gotten word that Adani is already circling on another company to fill the huge gap that AIG has left them with.
That company is Lloyd's of London.
Lloyd's is not like other insurers. It operates as a marketplace, where dozens of insurance companies all vie for business and share risk. It’s also famous as a place of last resort: where companies can find coverage for things that no one else will insure. And they charge handsomely for the privilege.
Already two members of the Lloyd’s marketplace have backed out of negotiations to insure Adani - just at the mere threat of a campaign being waged against them.
But to really hit Adani where it hurts we need Lloyd’s to issue an instruction to all of the insurers in its marketplace that they cannot insure Adani through their marketplace.
Right now Lloyd's is the only major European insurer which is still willing to insure new coal projects. That has got to end.
Can you add your voice now and call on Lloyd's to rule out insurance of the Adani Carmichael and all other new coal projects?
