After reaping millions from pilfering working Canadians on bread for decades, Loblaw, Canada's largest food retailer, is showing its true colours. Galen Weston, the billionaire CEO, is vocally opposing minimum wage increases for Loblaw workers, most recently in Ontario.
Loblaw is absolutely massive and owns over 20 different grocery chains across Canada including Shoppers Drug Mart, No Frills, Superstore, Zehrs and T&T. Not only that it has its own brands of clothing, financial services, pharmacy items and gasoline.
Instead of supporting its workers by supporting a living wage, it remained shamefully silent when Ontario's radical far-right government proposed scrapping the minimum wage increase. Not only that but last year, when a shareholder proposal for a living wage was proposed at its AGM, the executive board encouraged shareholders to vote against the proposal, preventing any motion towards real workers rights.
The good news is that we can make a difference. Loblaw is just coming out of a huge bread price-fixing scandal that rocked the public’s trust in the company. It cares what the public thinks and a huge outcry now could sway them to do what’s right for its workers.

Galen Weston, Loblaw CEO, took home a whopping $7.5 million last year, and yet he’s been one of the most vocal opponents of minimum wage increases. It’s time that Loblaw workers got their fair share of the pie with a living wage based on the cost of living for where they work.
Competitors, like Costco, have already caught on that paying living wages benefits everyone and are regarded as a gold standard in the industry for workers wages and benefits. It's time Loblaw got with the game. It employs over 136,000 people across the country and paying a living wage would make a real difference to so many families.
