McDonald’s chickens come from farms described as ‘hell on earth’.
Bred to grow too big, too fast, they can barely walk from the weight of their own oversized bodies. These birds live in conditions so cramped they only have space the size of an A4 sheet of paper each. Their legs burn from the toxic fumes of their own waste.
Why? To make McNuggets and McChicken sandwiches.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. A leading group of animal charities has pulled together the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC): a set of ambitious standards to radically improve animal welfare at these hellish farms. Pret, ASK Italian, Zizzi, Prezzo have already signed up... but not McDonald’s.
McDonald’s slick marketing campaigns can easily have us fooled into thinking its chickens enjoy stress-free lives roaming open fields. The company even released a whitewashed welfare ‘policy’ -- a ‘policy’ that not a single serious animal protection NGO has supported.
But here's the trick, public pressure has forced McDonald’s to make real changes in the past. Back in 2015, it switched to cage-free eggs in the US and Canada -- because people like you demanded it. Let’s use that same pressure to score an even bigger win for farmed chickens.
With a McDonald’s restaurant in almost every neighbourhood, the fast-food giant has no excuse to cut corners on animal welfare. It’s about to endure a PR nightmare unless it signs up to the Better Chicken Commitment.
