*Update - Friday 9 November 2018: we won! Thanks to tens of thousands of amazing SumOfUs members, PayPal stopped processing payments for Tommy Robinson!*
Tommy Robinson, Europe’s loudest far right islamophobe, has been invited to speak at the US Congress.
Robinson makes a buck by stirring up racist violence with online content -- police say his social media posts radicalised a man who ploughed a van into Muslim worshippers in London last year.
Now, he’s been invited by known white supremacist Paul Gosar to speak at Congress on 14 November.
The far right is making international ties, spreading its web of racist violence. And Robinson is receiving millions in small online donations to grow this terrifying movement -- using websites like PayPal.
Here’s where you come in. We’ve got 13 days to force PayPal to end its vile business relationship with Robinson ahead of the visit which is set to make his project of hate $1 million. This will send an earthshaking message to the global far right: huge corporations will not enable your hatred, and fascists visiting congress will not become the new normal!
Professional racists like Robinson can’t exist without money. Public pressure has already forced payment processors to ban the David Horowitz Freedom Center -- one of the groups hosting Robinson -- whose founder shamelessly tried to whitewash history by blaming slavery on ‘black Africans’.
It’s corporate sponsored fascism. Corporations should not be letting the money flow into racist groups - and sitting back to count the profit -- while people are killed in their places of worship.
From Charlottesville to Pittsburgh, the far right is out of control. Its hateful agenda is becoming normalised -- and companies like PayPal have a lot to answer for. They’ve dropped groups before, and they can do it again, but we need to act now.
PayPal wants to protect its ‘progressive’ image, so if thousands of sign this petition they will have to act. But we don’t have long, the visit is in less than two weeks!
It’s hard to believe that in 2018, a man who once described British Muslims as “enemy combatants who want to kill you, maim you and destroy you” could be given such a prestigious platform as US Congress.
Despite this -- Robinson still enjoys limitless airtime in the European press, international promotion, and financial support from companies like PayPal.
There’s no more time for complacency. People are free to say what they like -- but as consumers, we’re also free to refuse to pay for their microphone.
Pressure from members like you has already made PayPal block other hate groups from using its platform. Tens of thousands of SumOfUs members like you already successfully pushed PayPal to stop processing payments for the violent French white supremacist group Génération Identitaire.
And when PayPal cut off a hate group in Sweden, its leader claimed it “knocked me down at the knees”.
We’ve been so inspired by the sheer number of SumOfUs members who came together to reject Trumpism earlier this year -- and nearly 100,000 of you who are calling on Mastercard to stop doing business with UK hate group Britain First. This is our chance to keep working together and reverse the rise of hate-fuelled politics.
If we win this, we won’t stop there. A win from Paypal will give us more leverage to pile pressure on other companies processing donations for any hate groups: Mastercard, Visa, and all credit cards giants helping the flow of money to the far-right.
