And if we do nothing, the Postal Service could be gone before the end of the summer.
Since Trump took office, he's been threatening to privatize the USPS -- which would be a dream come true for his corporate cronies and fellow conservatives, and a nightmare for the rest of us.
Now it looks like he's about to get his way. The Postal Service is bleeding cash, and Trump is withholding much-needed stimulus money in the hopes of finally forcing it into corporate hands.
Together, you and I must push Congress to rescue this centuries-old institution before it's too late!
In recent months, with people confined to their homes and stores shut down, the US post has become a vital lifeline delivering food, clothes, prescription drugs, kids' schoolbooks and more. And it's poised to be a major player in the 2020 elections as states switch to mail-in ballots.
But conservatives have been chipping away at the Postal Service for years, enacting unfair policies to deprive it of funding. Trump himself is itching to replace the USPS' unionized staff with low-paid gig workers and force it to raise its prices to rates many Americans can't afford.
The pandemic is his golden opportunity to do just that. He just refused a $13 billion grant that would have helped the USPS meet payroll, and installed one of his top donors as postmaster general -- it's only a matter of time before the Postal Service as we know it disappears.
The only thing that can stop this is a massive public outcry. Enough pressure from citizens will force Congress to hold fast against Trump's plotting and release the money needed to keep the USPS alive. But we've only got weeks left to act.
