40 protesters were killed by the President's security forces in just a month.

The new President, Dina Boluarte, backed by a wide range of far-right groups, including the army and the national police, has declared a state of emergency. This has given free-rein for savage attacks on unarmed demonstrators, accusing them of being ‘vandals' and ‘terrorists’ to justify it.

International pressure is key to holding governments accountable for egregious human rights violations. It has made her apologise for all of these deaths, but she has said she won't resign. What the people of Peru are saying is that violence must end, she must resign and call for elections. We can save lives in Peru if we increase the heat on Peru's government.

Many say that the media and oligopolies relentlessly attacked Pedro Castillo, Peru’s first campesino President, since day one – and now he’s been thrown in jail.

Millions, especially in the most impoverished areas of the country, those who support Castillo the most – have been protesting for weeks. Boluarte’s approval rating is just 8%, and many are calling her regime a military-backed dictatorship.

This is why they are calling for new elections immediately so that the people of Peru can decide and put their interests before those with more power.

The new Peruvian government will say that no one should mess with “local politics”. But if we all come together to support our allies in Peru to amplify their demands, we can help bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.

#SOSPeru! Let’s join the people of Peru and demand elections immediately!
