One year ago this week, over 30,000 SumOfUs members called on Tyson Foods to do better. But America’s largest meat producer is still expanding its factory farm empire, buying conflict palm oil and ignoring worker and environmental abuses in its supply chain.  

A year after we took Tyson to task for its treatment of animals, workers, and the planet, the food giant is still lagging behind competitors when it comes to palm oil and responsible food policy in general. Just this summer, Mighty Earth singled out Tyson Foods for its role in creating Gulf of Mexico “dead zones” caused by manure and fertilizer pollution.

We need to make sure Tyson executives know we’re still here to hold them accountable to a real, responsible palm oil policy. As the country’s biggest meat producer and a major conflict palm oil customer, Tyson has a huge environmental footprint. It’s going to take all of us coming together to force Tyson towards a better path.

When it comes to palm oil, Tyson Foods still doesn’t disclose its suppliers -- putting it at extreme risk of sourcing palm oil from companies that are rife with forced and child labor -- not to mention razing Indonesian rain forest.

Meanwhile, its factory farms are inhumane and dangerous for both animals and workers. Despite increasing production line speeds, Tyson routinely denies poultry workers bathroom breaks, and denies responsibility for workers who are injured on the job.

We’ve come together in the past to push industry giants like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts to adopt sustainable palm oil policies -- but Tyson Foods is stuck in the past. Let’s join voices to finish what we started a year ago and demand Tyson make a time-bound commitment to cut conflict palm oil from its supply chain.
